ThemeChilly Switches From Restrictive Usage License To GPL License
ThemeChilly feels immense pride in announcing that it now follows GPL licensing for all its products.
What is GNU General Public License (GPL)?
The GNU General Public License was first released in 1989 by Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundation, with a mission to protect the freedom of end users.
GPL is an open source, copyleft license that permits all the licensees – individuals, organizations and companies to modify the source code under certain conditions.
Prominent software programs licensed under the GPL includes the Linux kernel, the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC).
According to Richard Stallman “Software under the GPL would be a spider plant, if one takes a piece of it and puts it somewhere else, it grows there too.” What a thought!
What benefits GPL licensing provides to users?
GPL provides licensees with certain freedoms:
- Freedom to run the software for any purpose and at any price.
- Freedom to study how the software works and change the software to suit your needs.
- Freedom to tinker around with the software code as per your wish.
“Initially at ThemeChilly, we had a relatively restrictive usage license for our themes and plugins, as we were slightly apprehensive about the possible ‘piracy’ GPL might’ve entailed on our WordPress products; a misconception we had, due to, frankly, our misunderstanding, or rather limited understanding, of GPL and its implications.
Having come to fully grasp how perfectly GPL captures, and passes on the essence and liberty of WordPress to everyone – the developers and users alike, it made good sense for us to have all our products GPL’d.
Being a part of WordPress community, we want our end users to have and benefit from the same level of freedom that WordPress as a platform has provided to us.”🙂 says Dakshesh Verma, Marketing head –ZNetTechnologies.
How ThemeChilly users benefit with GPL license?
Just like GPL compliant WordPress permits modifications in the source code, similarly ThemeChilly products’ users- a buyer, developer or a webmaster can tinker around with their code as per their convenience.
You can always come for support and updations to ThemeChilly. 🙂
